OVERVIEW
Leave the bustle of the big city behind as you cycle along quiet laneways and dirt paths toward the Cu Chi Tunnels. Weave in and out of villages and fields and pass small children whizzing by on their way to school as you cover more than 25kms on bicycle. Visit the amazing network of tunnels at Cu Chi and learn about the wartime history before returning via bike and car back to Ho Chi Minh City.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Depart from Ho Chi Minh City at 0800 and transfer by vehicle 30km out of Saigon to avoid the busy traffic. Spend the morning riding backroads to Cu Chi tunnels, passing rice fields, rubber plantations and local villages.
Visit the Cu Chi tunnels. More than 250 km long and three levels deep, the tunnels were important for the Viet Cong victory over the Americans as they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area around Saigon. Today the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience of what underground life in the American war was like. The district of Cu Chi was the most bombed shelled, gassed, defoliated, and generally devastated area in the history of warfare. While U.S. forces relied on artillery support from fixed "Fire Bases," the Vietnamese used their tunnel system to move their artillery around, making it difficult for the U.S. troops to locate them.
Enjoy lunch at the tunnels, alongside the Saigon River. Continue cycling a great tarmac road to Trang Bang, from there cut across countryside by bike or bus towards Ha Nghia and Duc Hoa. This afternoon, return to Saigon by vehicle. Responsible Travel: Traveling by bicycle is an eco-friendly, emissions-free way to sightsee.
